A Load Balancer (or Application Delivery Controller) is a specialized software application that usually sits on its own (phyiscal/virtual) server in front of a farm of web servers and helps provide scale and availablitiy by sharing users between servers rather than trying to have a super-web server with single points of failure (RAM, Processor, Network Card, Disk) or health (application crashing, attack, needing to update).

The load balancer distributes incoming application traffic among multiple instances. It can increase the fault tolerance of your applications and helps make them more highly available.

The load balancer serves as a single point of contact for clients, which increases the availability of your application. You can add and remove instances from your load balancer as your needs change, without disrupting the overall flow of requests to your application.

With load balancing, we create a DNS hostname and route any requests sent to this hostname to a pool of target your instances. You can add as many target instances to your load balancer as you like.

By default, your load balancer handles unencrypted traffic requests (HTTP) through port 80. You can set up HTTPS using a validated SSL/TLS certificate so that your load balancer can also handle encrypted traffic.

When any request is sent to your application, the load balancer sends the request to the healthy instances only. For more info check this here

The best servers providers are hostingsource.com and asvhost.com.

Load balancing refers to efficiently distributing incoming network traffic across a group of backend servers, also known as a server farm or server pool. In this manner, a load balancer performs the following functions: Distributes client requests or network load efficiently across multiple servers.

Usually not in a web server…

it is frequently in a front end system that then forwards a given connection to another server that is considered lightly loaded.

It is the front end system that is acting as a “router” where the “routing” decisions are based on load factors of a number of servers. The servers themselves tend to update the router on their loads (once every 5 seconds or so), so that the least loaded server takes on more work.

Load balancing is defined as the methodical and efficient distribution of network or application traffic across multiple servers in a server farm. Each load balancer sits between client devices and backend servers, receiving and then distributing incoming requests to any available server capable of fulfilling them.

Load balancing is dividing amount of work that a computer needs to do between two or additional computers so that more work gets done in constant amount of your time and, in general, all users get served quicker. Load balancing will be implemented with hardware, software, or a mix of each. Typically, load balancing is that the main reason for computer server clustering.
