Well, any database management system (DBMS) that can react to queries from client machines formatted in the SQLlanguage when capitalized, the term generally refers to either of two database management products from Sybase and Microsoft. Both companies offer client-server DBMS products called SQL Server.

The essential contrast is the authorizing (as you specify). Alternate contrasts are around reflecting (web can just fill in as a witness), distributing (web can just subscribe), and execution (web does not accompany SQL Profiler). There are more contrasts when you escape the SQL Engine and into SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
