DDR4 RAM is not backwards compatible with DDR3 motherboards and vice versa. The notch has been moved to prevent accidental insertion of the wrong type of memory. Instead of 240 pins, each module features 288 pins.

DDR4 RAM isn't in reverse perfect with DDR3 motherboards and the other way around. The indent has been moved to anticipate unplanned addition of the wrong sort of memory. Rather than 240 pins, every module highlights 288 pins.

You cannot use DDR4 RAM in DDR3 Slot. The DDR3 Slot latch is different from DDR4 RAM. And every DDR RAM slot is different, they are not backwards compatible.

There's no way you can do that. It could cause many problems with your system.

How many years will the DDR3 RAM remain relevant?

A motherboard with DDR4 slots cannot use DDR3, and you can't put DDR4 into a DDR3 slot. DDR4 operates at a lower voltage than DDR3.
