Serial ATA (SATA, abbreviated from Serial AT Attachment) is a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives, optical drives, and solid-state drives.

SATA, short for Serial ATA (which is an abbreviation for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), is an IDE standard first released in 2001 for connecting devices like optical drives and hard drives to the motherboard.

The term SATA generally refers to the types of cables and connections that follow this standard.

Serial ATA replaces Parallel ATA as the IDE standard of choice for connecting storage devices inside of a computer. SATA storage devices can transmit data to and from the rest of the computer over twice as fast as an otherwise similar PATA device.

SATA is the faster serial version of the parallel ATA (PATA) interface.

External interface. Optional (eSATA) Serial ATA (SATA, abbreviated from Serial AT Attachment) is a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives, optical drives, and solid-state drives.

Short for SerialATA, SATA 1.0 was first released in August 2001 and is a replacement for the Parallel ATA interface used in IBM compatible computers. SerialATA is capable of delivering 1.5 Gbps (1500 MBps) of performance to each drive within a disk array. It has the benefit of being backwards-compatible with ATA and ATAPI devices, and offers a thin, small cable solution, as seen in the photo on the right. This cable helps make a much easier cable routing and offers better airflow in the computer when compared to the earlier ribbon cables used with ATA drives.
eSATA connectionSATA also supports external drives through External SATA more commonly known as eSATA. eSATA offers many more advantages when compared to other solutions. For example, it is hot-swappable, supports faster transfer speeds with no bottleneck issues like USB and FireWire, and supports disk drive technologies such as S.M.A.R.T..
However, eSATA does have some disadvantages such as not distributing power through the cable like USB, which means drives require an external power source. The eSATA cable also supports a maximum length of up to 2m. Because of these disadvantages don't plan on eSATA becoming the only external solution for computers.

Outer interface. Discretionary (eSATA) Serial ATA (SATA, curtailed from Serial AT Attachment) is a PC transport interface that associates host transport connectors to mass stockpiling gadgets, for example, hard plate drives, optical drives, and strong state drives

Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) or Serial ATA cables are used to connect devices in computer cable assemblies, such as storage devices, for example. The SATA technology itself is a connecter interface primarily used for computer bus connections in storage applications.
