A website which attempts to attract users and develop its search engine rankings by publishing great amounts of low quality content or content copied from other websites. It is unethical and not only infuriates the search engines but your potential customers as well. If you are into black hat SEO tactics, content farming would be one of them.

Content farms use a large pool of freelancers who choose or are assigned ideas from a list that is compiled by analyzing user search data. The main goal of Content Farms isn't to produce high quality articles, it is to attract search engine traffic to generate advertising revenue.

A content farm, also called a content mill, is a Web site whose content is written for search engine bots instead of human readers. Topics on a content farm are chosen specifically for their ability to rank highly in search engine results.

Content farm is a site that scrapes content from other sites and slaps ads against it. Demand Media meanwhile has an army of freelancers who create original content that they put ads against.Content farms on the other hand look much more legitimate. These are big and oftentimes massive sites which contains all sorts of information. The sites which got rewarded were the sites with high quality unique content and the sites which were penalized were the sites with low-quality or spammy content.

This business is probably not sustainable. In many ways, it is/was a business of opportunity, taking advantage of weaknesses in google and other search engines. One tweak of the google code can, and often does, put them far back in the search results.
