Ive just bought one and I thought that I would be alerted to the presence of all speed cameras on my route.

Presumably this is not the case?

So I have now realised that I need to download POI alerts from internet.

Do I have to buy these or can I get these for free from somewhere?

Ever considered just going the speed limit?
Costs nothing, and it's guaranteed 100% to work :-)

It's hard to find a good database for free.
You can buy one at PhantomAlert (http://gpsalerts.2dl.us/). 10bucks only

I've got some new you can use.
You don't have to pay those unless the ticket is served to you by hand.

However, if you throw it away and the city wants to press the issue by hiring a company to physically serve you, you have to pay the fee of the server.

Most cities are financially hurting right now and will not bother. Which is why they're installing those revenue generators in the first place.

TomTom's Go 740 Live is a GPS device from TomTom with a built-in cellular radio. This wireless data connection allows the unit to download information relevant to your journey, such as traffic, weather, and fuel prices. While these connected services are a useful addition, they didn't always make my commute easier, and the services' costs add up over time.
