Why Won't USB Expansion Hub Work?

Is there any possible remedy for this? Is there a USB expansion hub on the market, not terribly expensive, that might fix this issue?

Appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Disconnect the power plug and the plug connecting the hub to the USB port at the back of the computer. Wait a few seconds. ... Put the power plug back into the hub. Then put the USB connection plug back into the hub and everything will work again until static electricity somehow builds up and incapacitates the ports again.

A built-in internal USB port/socket can only supply 500mA. Try to draw more than that and it shuts down. An external USB hub should be a powered hub using a mains adaptor so that each port can draw 500mA.
