There are so many to choose from, both paid and free, that it's hard to pick the "best." It depends on what you want to do.

Some good ones are:

SEO for WordPress by Yoast (Of course)

Wordfence Security

Akismet (which is pre-installed and well worth the $5 a month in time saved training another spam filter)

I like Google Analyticator for adding Analytics reports. It's not as cody as Yoast Analytics, which is also good. It's just a personal preference for me.

JetPack from WordPRess is about the best for sharing, publicizing what you've written (videoed, talked about, etc.), creating a mobile site from an old theme, and so very much more.

I also like Revolution Slider -- not free, but a great dev tool for sliders. You can layer images, text ets., and the settings are boundless. Code Canyon makes that one.

WooCommerce for e-commerce. Just be sure to use a Woo theme to accompany it. (Saves headaches on down the road when Woo updates. They update their themes to be sure they're accommodating.)
