Chat is usually in real time, when both people are online and talking with instant messaging. While forums have discussions that can last for months. People start a thread and then members of that forum can leave reply when they are online. Chat is instant but chatting on forums can be a long process. There are different separate platforms for chat and forums however some platforms provide both functionality too.

The difference between a chat and a forum is the same. We communicate in both the forum and the chart, but the difference is that in the chat, we communicate in real time, but in the forum, we can communicate both online and offline. Threads are another name for a forum.

A chatroom is typically live text-based conversation (all parties are on at the same time), while forums are for asynchronous conversation (not everyone is on at the same time). You can use both modes within a single community (for example, using live chat for special events, and forums for ongoing discussions).
