If you site is popular enough that other people will continue to make backlinks your just fine. If not, in terms of SERP, it will most likely die a slow and painful death. Either way it is always good to keep building quality links.

It will come down in searches made online if you stop making back links of a site

When we stop creating Back-links for our website the reputation of website is depend on the quality of back-links which we have created previous. If these all the links are high authorized and quality back-links then our ranking is stable for long time. But if the links are low quality then we lose our SERP.
