Email was never dead. As a marketing technique it's always generated more ROI than almost anything else. It was declared dead awhile back because social media was rising and everybody thought that was going to be the new thing. No doubt even today, businesses are sending emails to their clients.

In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It usually involves using email to send ads, request business, or solicit sales or donations, and is meant to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness.
