The 4 types of meta tags are:

- Meta title tag
- Meta description tag
- Meta keywords tag
- Meta robots tag

•Meta Keywords Attribute – An array of keywords you deem relevant to the page in question.
•Title Tag – You can see title tag at the top of your browser. Search engines view this text as the "title" of your page.
•Meta Description Attribute - A brief summary of the page.
•Meta Robots Attribute – It is an intimation to search engine crawlers as to what they should do with the page.

There are 3 most commonly used meta tags, which are used in Google. First one is Title Tag, it should be the main keyword, or phrase for which you are trying to rank. Then 2nd one is description tag, in the description also use the keywords, so you can get benefit of on page seo. Last one is keyword meta tag, it can be used to arrange your articles in wordpress etc, it has nothing to do much with SEO. So these are the main three meta tags used for Search Engine optimization.
