It is good to have 10-15 keywords for your website. You can keep 5-6 focus keywords for generating good traffic and other less important keywords for faster ranking of webpages in search engines.

Hi Friends,
That depends on how many pages you have up on your website.

And your budget.

And the audience / market you want to target with your website.

For small businesses, I often suggest 5 keywords or so.

And once their websites appear on Google's first page on these 5 keywords, then can integrate more keywords in their SEO keywords basket.

And by the way when you are targeting 5 keywords or so, you are not only targeting these 5 keywords but are also likely to rank on their variations.
