Before picking a box, decide whether you are transcoding or just serving.

If you're transcoding on the fly, that's a CPU (or GPU) problem and core
count and clock speed are what you're shopping for. If you're serving
pre-encoded HLS or DASH segments, CPU is almost never the bottleneck — it's
egress capacity and disk I/O, and a big expensive CPU buys you nothing.
People routinely buy the wrong machine because they never separated these.

On "unmetered": that word is doing a lot of work and it's worth interrogating.
Unmetered is not unlimited. Ask three things and get them in writing — what is
the port speed, what triggers the fair use clause, and what happens when you
hit it. Throttled to a trickle, billed for overage, and suspended are three
very different outcomes, and plenty of unmetered plans mean the first one.

The question almost nobody asks and probably should: who does the provider
peer with. For streaming, your traffic all goes one direction, outbound to
consumer ISPs. A host with poor eyeball peering will deliver a worse stream
than a host with less headline bandwidth and better peering. Their looking
glass and their PeeringDB entry will tell you more than the spec sheet does.

KVM is the right call over container virtualisation, but the thing to confirm
is whether the vCPU is dedicated or shared. Transcoding on shared vCPU gets
throttled exactly when you least want it to.

Last thing: past a certain volume a CDN in front is cheaper than scaling up
the unmetered box, and the crossover point arrives sooner than most expect.
Worth modelling before committing to a big monthly.

Also confirm what kind of conditions your server would be kept under - that is very important.
