We’re preparing the backend infrastructure for a small startup and want to keep the initial setup simple. The application will use Node.js, PostgreSQL and a few background services.

Hostpro.com is currently one of the options we’re evaluating. Their KVM VPS plans with root access look attractive because we want complete control over the deployment environment without committing to a more expensive cloud setup.

For an early-stage product with unpredictable traffic, what VPS size would you consider a sensible starting point?

Resources is the first thing you look at in a host, if it provides the space, bandwidth and add-on domains you need in case your site becomes successful.
Believe Rightservers.com web host is flexible and stable enough to satisfy all your specific requirements and keep your web sites always online. This is what premium vps (https://rightservers.com/vps-hosting/) hosting should look like.

I’ve found that green hosting services are often just as affordable as traditional ones, so there’s really no downside to choosing them.
