the basic aspects of webdesign are:
* The content: the substance, and information on the site should be relevant to the site and should target the area of the public that the website is concerned with.
* The usability: the site should be user-friendly, with the interface and navigation simple and reliable.
* The appearance: the graphics and text should include a single style that flows throughout, to show consistency. The style should be professional, appealing and relevant.
* The visibility: the site must also be easy to find via most, if not all, major search engines and advertisement media.

The internet is huge. Google alone list over 3 billion pages, looking at one each second of the day would take you over 99 years to view them all!
Many people can do website design, but how many can actually design a website. The design element is so important and so often overlooked.
If you intend to send out brochures to your customers, or to potential customers, and the brochure was of poor quality what type of image will this reflect on your business? A poor website will do exactly the same.
When designing a website one of the most important task to remember is colour co-ordination. Ideally you should strive for a maximum of three main colours, with variations and tints of these. By using more you run the risk of non-matching colours and ultimately less easy on the eye for visitors.
Next comes navigation. Colour co-ordination and navigation are the top main priorities. If your site isn't easy to navigate, people will not stay around to delve deeper. Once you site is designed ask some friends or family to test it out. The easier your website is to navigate, the longer people will stay.
Accessibility is a key issue that has been highlighted recently with a AUD$20,000 fine imposed on an Australian website for not ensuring people with disabilities and sight impairments could use the website. These rulings are few and far between (for now) but to help always use ALT tags on images (helping to describe your image), plus use text based links where possible. For further information you can check out http://www.w3.org
You have your site ready, it's full of content, great design and ready to hit the super highway - now how will people find you. This is where SEO comes in to play (Search Engine Optimisation). Optimising your site for the main search engines can help bring free targeted traffic to your website.

One of the main aspects associated with basic web design is deciding where certain things should feature on your web page, to do this correctly you should ask yourself, what the element is that you want to place on your site, how this element relates to the overall goal of the page and where said element fits in with other elements of the page. If you do this and you spend time generally thinking about how you intend to design your website before you actually start building it you will create an excellent site that visitors will want to return to again and again. Basically if you are able to engage your customers through a compelling design then you have done half the work already when it comes to getting them to do business with you.
As I have previously mentioned one of the main areas of basic web design is all about placing elements in the correct position on your website. The first thing that helps you do this is knowing what the element is. For example a heading would always come before an image or a block of text. Another example is the navigation of your site; the general place that this is found within your website is top left or top of the page in the center. It generally runs across the top of a site underneath the logo. There is a logical reason for this, which is that for one it is common knowledge that this is where the navigation bar will be and secondly it is the most convenient place for your visitors to access the part of your website that they want. If you start moving the navigation because you think it will look better elsewhere you can say goodbye to new visitors as no one is going to stick around on your site if they don’t know where they go to navigate around it.
You need to be careful where you place elements on your website as everything is significant and all of the elements are needed to pull the design together. For example something as simple as drawing a line after a headline runs the risk of disconnecting the article title from the actual article. If you have an electronics website you need to make sure the title is definitely associated with the content underneath.

Designing an effective web site requires more than just gathering relevant information and posting it on the web. Like a good paper or research presentation, a quality web project demands as much attention to the selection, organization, and presentation of material as to the underlying research itself. You should strive, above all, to be both clear and engaging in every aspect of site design. Without the first, you will quickly lose your audience. Without the second, you'll never catch their attention in the first place.

Basic aspects of a web design:
There are 2 aspects of a web design. Firstly, the visual presentation of a web page should be good so that it attracts the user. Secondly, it should include all the necessary information for the non-human browsers. Therefore, it can be said that a web design should fulfill the functional as well as the aesthetic requirements.

I have been a freelance web designer for 3-4 some odd years. It was all self taught. But a few things to know upfront is. Web Design, unless it's large scale or high end, does not pay enough to be a full time job.
Second, unless you have some examples under your belt, you will usually not be taken seriously. To start, you need to design some sites for free, or very low priced, knowing they will be your proverbial resume sites.
Third, learn a CMS as early as possible, it is how 90% of all good sites are built. CMS Example being Joomla, Wordpress and so on, I recommend Joomla. Nightmare to learn at first, but so easy to use afterward.
Also, never design a site that you would not use for yourself. Which is where a designers eye comes in handy. I can look at a site and tell you if I like it or not, and why I do or don't, and what I could do to make it better. Deviantart is a treasure trove for Web 2.0 ideas for designs.
Lastly... Templates are the world and the moon... Taking a template and hacking it to bits till it looks how YOU want, yet in the end no where near how it originally looked is quite a good feeling. I often use a template for a Jump-Start. Something to get me pointed in the right direction.
Again. Joomla. Learn it, get good at it and the world is your oyster.
Good luck and have fun! If you don't love web design, its not where one should be. Love your job! Be Passionate!
